Even as the country today (10 April) saw the highest surge in Coronavirus cases till date, Maharashtra continued to stay the worst hit state by the pandemic with the total number of Covid-19 patients being at 1,390.
Financial capital Mumbai which saw 218 positive cases of COVID-19 has the highest cases in the state at 993. The number of deaths in the city also rose by 10 taking the total number of Corona fatalities to 64 as reported.
The total fatalities in the state is also the highest in the country at 97. This is almost half the total number of fatalities in the country which stands at 199, as detailed by the report of the Maharashtra’s Medical Education and Drug Department.
The state’s mortality rate at 7.11 per cent (until 10 am today) is also among the highest in the country and more than twice the national average of 3.10 per cent. With five new positive cases on Friday, Mumbai's Dharavi slum, infamous for being the largest slum in Asia has 22 cases as of today.
The state government was said to be contemplating an extension of the lockdown until 30 April as the situation worsened starting Thursday itself. It also announced the deployment of the SRPF in congested areas to enforce the lockdown, as reported.
