GMR group, which currently runs Delhi and Hyderabad International Airports, unveiled its plans to modernise and develop Nagpur Airport.

Following a ruling by the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court, GMR plans to develop Nagpur''s Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in a phased manner to a capacity of around 30 million passengers annually.

Phase wise development plans by GMR include a complete transformation of the Nagpur airport over four years, including the construction of a new greenfield integrated terminal, taxiways, new car park and approach road, a second runway, a new Air Traffic Control Tower (ATC) and a new cargo terminal.

In October 2018, the group emerged as the highest bidder for Nagpur International Airport's development, operation, and management on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.

Though the letter of award (LoA) was issued to GMR in March 2019, the Maharashtra government cancelled the tender process in March 2020.

Terming this cancellation as "arbitrary and unfair", Bombay High Court on 18 August quashed the March 2020 communication.

"Consequent to the ruling by the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, GMR is pleased to take up the responsibility of developing and transforming Nagpur Airport into a world-class facility," GMR said in a release.

"We will develop a new greenfield integrated terminal at Nagpur Airport with the latest amenities and modern equipment on par with the best in the world," SGK Kishore, Executive Director – South and Chief Innovation Officer, GMR Group told Moneycontrol.
