Bimal Gurung, the former had of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and leader of the Gorkha Jamnukti Morcha (GJM) yesterday (27 April) alleged that Rohingya refugees were being resettled in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts of the Gorkhaland region in West Bengal in a conspiracy to cause a demographic shift that would render the native Gorkhas homeless, reports The New Indian Express.
Addressing a press conference, he said that Rohingyas were being resettled in the area despite the Centre viewing them as a security threat. He called it a sinister conspiracy to marginalise the inhabitabts of the region.
Gurung urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh to take note and take the necessary steps.
Certain political elements are allowing them to settle here for vote bank politics and allowing politics of votes to supersede national interests. I request everyone living in our region to remain vigilant and report all such suspicious settlements that may be coming up near you.Bimal Gurung
He also said that due to the region’s politically sensitive nature – borders with Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet and Bangladesh – it was important that the matter was viewed with the seriousness it deserved.
