In order to reduce expenses and discrepancies in generating and filing e-waybills under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, the GST Network that operates the system has called for requests from service providers to automatically calculate the distance between two postal index number (PIN) codes, reports Mint. The GSTN along with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has floated a request for proposal (RFP) for the same.
The e-waybill system was rolled out under GST as a form of electronic documentation of goods to ensure that they do not go under or unreported. Used as an anti-tax evasion system, it is generated online for all goods moving within a state and across multiple states.
The taxpayers or transporters, knowingly or unknowingly, may enter the distance wrongly and, hence, it results in loss of time. It also makes transporters further clarify the details to the verifying office. The motive behind the move, as mentioned in the RFP
Transporters currently have to enter the PIN code of the origin and the destination along with the distance while generating the e-waybill. The waybill is valid for a day for distances less than 100 km and thereafter the validity is extended by a day for every subsequent 100 km.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
