Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is exploring opportunities to launch a flex-fuel vehicle in India in the coming two years.
Honda already operates flex-fuel two-wheelers in Brazil. It has been planning a phase-wise implementation and the integration of the technology in its model range in India.
The automaker has already sold seven million flex-fuel vehicles in Brazil until now.
“We have over a decade of experience with flex fuel in Brazil, where emission norms are at par with Euro IV levels. India follows a variation of Euro V norms,” HMSI Chairman and Managing Director (MD) Atshushi Ogata was quoted in a report by The Economic Times.
He added, “We are investigating how much ethanol we can blend in India so that fuel efficiency is not impacted. The key point for making the product successful is if consumers can see benefits in it.”
At the same time, Ogata maintained that internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles will make up for a significant proportion of two-wheeler sales in India even a decade from now.
However, he lauded the government for taking positive policy measures and said that biofuel technology can help in sustainably reducing oil imports.
