In a major boost to the nation's fight to contain the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the nation's defence establishment has pledged Rs 500 crore to the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM-CARES) fund, reports the Times of India.

The sum is being contributed towards the nation's pursuit to emerge victorious out of the crisis. This includes contributions from around 15-lakh-strong forces of the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, the Indian Air Force and the Indian Coast Guard.

Furthermore, the sum pledged by the defence establishment also includes contributions from employees of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and its 50 laboratories, five defence PSUs, for shipyards and 39 ordnance factories.

The development was made public after the Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday (29 March) gave his nod to the proposal for contribution of a day's salary by all the personnel under the Union Ministry of Defence.
