The Indian Railways is set to transform into the world's largest 100 per cent electrified rail transport system by 2023, Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal said on Sunday (4 October), reports Hindustan Times.

The development comes as the Indian Railways has embarked on a massive electrification drive.

Announcing the ambitious goal, Goyal also said that the work is currently underway to set up an infrastructure to generate 20 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy which would power the entire rail network.

Goyal also asserted that no other nation in the world, even developed ones have launched such an ambitious project. He said that the entire world is watching India's massive push for environment-friendly modes of transport.

Emphasising that the project is a crucial part of the government's initiative towards the building of a green nation, Goyal also said that as the nation is progressing on a path of self-reliance, Indian Railways has already become a procurer of almost 98 per cent indigenous equipment. This excludes certain technology products which, Goyal said, will also be indigenised gradually.
