The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is investigating seven members of Parliament (MPs) and 98 members of legislative assembly (MLAs) from different states for "substantial increases" in their assets.
According to a report in the Times of India, a preliminary investigation by the Income Tax Department brought the matter to light.
The CBDT told the Supreme Court that the names of these members will be submitted to the court in a sealed cover on Tuesday. The report also states that the department conducted preliminary investigations after Lucknow-based non-governmental organisation Lok Prahari alleged a significant increase in the assets held by legislators.
The probe carried out by the I-T Department has revealed that there had been "huge" increases in their assets. Initial inquiry by the department is underway against 20 MPs including nine Lok Sabha members and 42 MLAs.
