A volley of five rockets hit near the United States (US) embassy in Baghdad, the capital city of Iraq on Sunday (26 January) merely two days after thousands protesters gathered in the city against the presence of US troops in the country, Asian News International (ANI).
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack in the heavily protected 'Green Zone' so far. However, no casualties or material damage has been reported as an outcome of the attack.
The tensions in the region have been simmering high ever since the US carried out an aerial strike in the Iraqi territory close to the Baghdad International Airport earlier this month, killing neighbouring Iran's tallest military commander General Qassem Soleimani.
Meanwhile, it should be noted that the 'Green Zone' is house to embassies and diplomatic missions from a host of countries, along with various Government agencies. It lies in the very centre of Baghdad city.
