Police officials have said that Islamist extremism was the likely cause behind the murder of British Member of Parliament David Amess. The 69 year old MP belonged to the Conservative Party and represented the constituency of Southend West since 1997.

On Friday (15 October) he had been hosting an event for his constituency when a man entered the building and stabbed him several times. While the man appears to have been arrested by the UK police searches are said to be on at atleast two locations in London.

The incident was officially declared as an act of terrorism confirming Islamist motivations behind the murder.

David Amess is the second member of parliament to be murdered in the last five years. An MP belonging to the Labour Party too had been stabbed to death back in 2016 during a similar constituency meeting.

Further, in 2010 another Labour MP named Stephen Timms had been stabbed but survived the attack. David Amess was a Catholic practitioner and supported Britain's exit from Europe. He leaves behind four daughters, a son and his wife.
