Just days after 13 US soldiers and dozens of Afghans were killed in a bomb blast in Kabul, US President Joe Biden has said that another terror attack is "highly likely" in the next 24 to 36 hours.
"The situation on the ground continues to be extremely dangerous, and the threat of terrorist attacks on the airport remains high," Biden said after a meeting with his national security team, including commanders in the field. "Our commanders informed me that an attack is highly likely in the next 24-36 hours," the US President added.
“The next few days of this mission will be the most dangerous period to date,” Biden was told, according to a White House statement.
Biden's warning comes only days ahead of the 31 August deadline for the exit of the US forces in Afghanistan.
According to the Pentagon, more than 5,000 US service members are in Kabul to assist with the evacuation efforts. At least 117,000 people have been flown out from Kabul over the last few days, including approximately 5,400 Americans, the Pentagon has revealed.
Biden said forces on the ground have “approval of all authorities they need to conduct the operation and protect our troops".
