Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal along with Vivek Tankha and Manish Singhvi appeared for the Congress ruled states in the Supreme Court to argue against Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami’s petition seeking quashing of FIRs against him.
These cases were filed against Arnab by Congress functionaries after he criticised their party president Sonia Gandhi over the lynching of Sadhus in Palghar.
As per CNNNews18 legal editor Utkarsh Anand, Sibal argued that Arnab’s comments during the show which aired on 21 April could not come under the purview of freedom of expression and accused the journalist of whipping up communal sentiments.
Sibal added that the Maharashtra government wants to prosecute Arnab over his comments and reiterated that the FIR against him should not be quashed at this stage.
“Who knows sedition charge can tomorrow be invoked against Arnab Goswami”, Sibal was quoted as saying.
Similarly representatives for Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan also opposed the quashing of FIRs against Arnab and alleged that he had breached terms of his broadcasting license by promoting enmity between different groups.
