Among all southern states in India, Karnataka makes it to the top of the list in terms of the number of bank robberies in the last five years. This does not include ATM thefts as there is no data available for the same.
Since 2013-14, Karnataka has witnessed 179 bank robberies, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 154. Tamil Nadu stands third at 130. Since the creation of Telangana, nearly 27 robberies in banks have taken place. As compared to the other states, which are reducing the number of crimes committed in financial institutions, Karnataka is the only state where the numbers are significantly increasing.
On the national scale, Bihar is the highest with 434 bank robberies since the same time frame. West Bengal is second at 371. In Lok Sabha, the Ministry of Finance presented the data to a query that was based on the rising ATM thefts in India, Deccan Herald reported.
Replying to a written question on the number of ATM thefts in the country, Minister of State for Finance, Shiv Pratap Shukla, said there was no data in that regard. The current data provided by RBI only covers overall bank robberies.
