The case of Kerala policemen being used by the force’s senior officials for their personal work continues to see many twists and turns.
Latest is the revelation that 36 policemen perform the personal work of Director-General of Police Loknath Behera, reported Malayalam Daily Manorama. At least 11 of the policemen doing the DGP’s personal work are camp followers or orderlies. The rest have been allocated other jobs, including security.
An informal body called camp followers association has demanded that the policemen asked to do officials’ personal work be called back.
Last week, after the daughter of a police official named Sudesh Kumar assaulted a policeman who was Kumar’s driver, a hue and cry has been raised over engaging the cops in personal work of officials.
However, there are other policemen who prefer to work with ministers and political leaders for the “gains” they bring with it.
Data gathered informally by a police official at the headquarters revealed that over 3,000 policemen are engaged in doing personal work for their officials.
The controversy has also brought out how some policemen have to help their officials when they visit important temples in the State, like the Sree Krishna temple at Guruvayoor. Junior policemen have to ensure that the officials or their families are not put to any discomfort during their visit to the temple. These policemen are also supposed to take special “prasads” to their officials without fail.
