Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been writing to chief ministers of Haryana and Punjab seeking a meeting with them to discuss the problem of paddy stubble burning in these states. Widespread stubble burning has led to an alarming increase in pollution levels across the National Capital Region (NCR) besides taking air quality to dangerous levels. However, Kejriwal’s government has also come under criticism for such posturing instead of attempting doable solutions.
Responding to Kejriwal’s letter seeking a meeting, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar retorted crisply, pointing out how his government has already spent over Rs 30 crore to stop paddy stubble burning. He pointed out how publicly available satellite imagery data showed substantial reduction in stubble burning cases and fires from 2014 onwards in Haryana.
Khattar didn’t stop there, but demanded to know what the Delhi government has done to manage stubble burning in the 40,000 hectares of farms that fall within its jurisdiction.
He also said that problems such as widespread stubble burning required the collective action of every stakeholder and gently indicated Kejriwal didn’t seem to be interested in finding a workable solution.
