In protest over Rahul Gandhi’s controversial remark on the Hindu Mahasabha leader Veer Savarkar, BJP MLAs were seen wearing ‘I am Savarkar’ caps on the first day of the Mahrashtra Assembly winter session, reports The Indian Express.
Rahul Gandhi in a rally organised by Congress in Delhi had said, “My name is Rahul Gandhi, not Rahul Savarkar. I will never apologise for speaking truth and nor will any Congressman will do so.”
The BJP has been demanding an apology from Gandhi for his ‘Rape in India’ remark.
On Monday (16 December), Devendra Fadnavis led opposition in Maharashtra along with state party chief Chandrakant Patil, ex-Speaker Haribhau Bagade and former ministers and BJP MLAs arrived at the state secretariat building wearing the saffron caps with 'Mee Pan Savarkar' (I Am Savarkar) written on it.
Fadnavis has demanded “unconditional apology” from Gandhi over his remark and said,“Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should tender an unconditional apology over his remarks on Savarkar. He does not seem to have studied India’s history of the Independence movement.”
BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP, G V L Narasimha Rao said, “The more appropriate name for you Rahul Gandhi is Rahul Jinnah. Your Muslim appeasement politics and mindset makes you a worthy legatee of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, not Savarkar,”
The BJP also plans to raise the issue in the assembly along with the demand for a complete waiver of farm loans announced by the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi government of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
