Presenting the Union Budget 2019-20, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that a number of reforms were being proposed with regard to rental housing. She mentioned that current laws were not realistic nor fair in dealing with lessor-lessee relationships.
Describing the current system of rental regulations as “archaic”, she revealed that a model tenancy law would be finalised and sent out to states.
Sitharaman also spoke of the possibility of creating public infrastructure, including affordable housing, on the large number of land parcels currently owned by central government entities.
