A day after a Delhi court indefinitely postponed the hanging of four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, the Tihar jail officials has decided to file an application in the Patiala House court for fixing the execution date of the convicts, reports Economic Times.
The move comes after President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday (1 February) rejected the mercy petition of one of the convict Vinay Kumar Sharma.
"In view of rejection of mercy petition of Vinay Kumar Sharma by the President, the Tihar Jail is approaching the Patiala House Court for fixing the date of execution in respect of all the four convicts," Director General (Prison) Sandeep Goel was quoted in the report as saying.
Earlier on Friday (31 January), a Delhi court had postponed the execution of death warrants of the four Nirbhaya rape and murder case convicts - Vinay Kumar Sharma, Akshay Kumar, Mukesh Singh and Pawan - till further orders.
Meanwhile, one of the convicts Akshay Kumar on Saturday (1 February) filed a mercy petition before President.
