Inaugurating a new bridge constructed over the Brahmaputra river on Sunday, Union Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the centre will invest more than Rs 15,000 crore to develop 1,243 km of roads in Assam as National Highway. He also announced the construction of several bridges worth Rs 65,000 crore over the next five years.
“There will be no dearth of funds. You will be tired asking for funds, but I will not get tired giving you funds,” Gadkari said while announcing the projects. “I have ordered to prepare the DPR (Detailed Project Report) and it will be over soon. I hope the CM will initiate land acquisition process soon. As soon as the state government gives us the land and forest clearances, we will start the work immediately,” the minister added.
Over the next two years, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation will develop 143-km of roads at the cost of Rs 8,000 crore. This will include the construction of bridges over river Brahmaputra. Over Rs 100,000 crore will be spent in the next five years to develop infrastructure in Assam, Gadkari said.
Though the ministry wanted to achieve the target of constructing 40-km of road every day, it was able to construct up to 18-km of road per day. “We are hopeful of reaching 30-km every day by March,” he said. On the issue of investing Rs 100,000 crore in the state, he said work projects worth Rs 65,000 crore have already been sanctioned.
