As a democratic gesture, the administration of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, has adopted the internationally renowned Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), which was requested by the students, as reported by Deccan Herald.
Complying with the guidelines of UGC (University Grants Commission), VTU will adopt CBCS, retrospectively applying from the academic year 2015-16. This measure will provide the much needed academic flexibility and is expected to improve the quality of technical education.
CBCS is a much-desired reform as it allows students to expand their horizons and take up learning on related subjects. The choice-credit system adopts a novel ‘cafeteria’ type approach in which the students can take courses of their choice, learn at their own pace, undergo additional courses and acquire more than the required credits. The students can choose courses from three different levels: Core, Elective and Foundation.
Even in Bihar, universities have begun the process of rolling out CBCS in a phased manner. Despite the reforms taken by NDA government over the past four years, Indian universities continue to rank behind many of their peers in both the developing and developed counties.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
