Russian army museum's gallery of gallant soldiers situated in Moscow has featured a photograph and citation of an Indian soldier from Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district for his bravery and valiance during the Second World War, reports Times of India.
Hawaldar Gajendra Singh had been conferred with the prestigious 'Order of the Red Star' by the then Soviet dispensation in 1944, an honour which has been won by only one other Indian soldier who hailed from Tamil Nadu.
Following the development, the Indian Ambassador to Russia DB Venkatesh Verma wrote a letter to the family of the soldier and called the subject a matter of great pride for the nation, and a testament of the strong friendship between India and Russia.
Hawaldar Singh's son Bhagwan Singh expressed delight over the development and shared that his father had served most of his time in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) which is now Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region.
