O Panneerselvam, the acting Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has issued an order to convert late J Jayalalithaa's iconic Poes Garden residence into a memorial. Located at the Cathedral Road in the posh Teynampet area of capital Chennai, the building was Jayalalithaa’s abode for over 35 years.

"It is the people's wish that Amma's home should be a memorial," Panneerselvam has said. The information was shared on Panneerselvam’s official handle on Twitter.

V K Sasikala, Jayalalithaa’s long time aide and the current general secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), continues to live in the house. To convert the building into a memorial, Sasikala could be asked to vacate it. It is not clear if any legal will was left behind by Jayalalithaa, allowing Sasikala to live in the house after her death, India Today reported.

Meanwhile, Sasikala blamed governor C Vidyasagar Rao for purposely delaying her swearing in. She claimed that she has the support of at least 120 MLAs of the party, saying that they attended the legislative party meeting convened by her on 8 February. Panneerselvam, on the other hand, has said that he has the support of at least 50 MLAs. The AIADMK has a total of 134 MLAs in the Tamil Nadu assembly. The majority mark in the 234-member assembly is 117.
