A terrorist has been killed in an ongoing encounter at Chitragam in south Kashmir's Shopian district on Wednesday (19 August), officials said.
Police said the security forces had received a specific input about the presence of terrorists in the area, following which a joint operation was launched by the Army, CRPF, and police to flush them out.
As the security forces zeroed in, they came under heavy fire from the militants that triggered the encounter, officials said while adding one terrorist was killed in the ensuing exchange of fire.
"One unidentified terrorist has been killed in the Shopian encounter; the operation is going on," the police said.
More details are awaited as the encounter is still underway.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
