Tata Steel has set up a coal preparation plant with two million tonne per annum (MTPA) capacity at Jamadoba that falls under its Jharia division.
This 2 MTPA coal preparation plant earlier used to be Asia’s oldest running washery since 1952 and has now been converted into one of the most modern washeries worldwide.
This plant is India’s first washery in which a 100 per cent dewatering facility has been constructed within the plant itself.
It is said to be a significant upgrade from the conventional setup and cuts down the need for dry fog systems, tailing ponds and auto sprinklers.
“Introduction of appropriate technology is key to the success of underground mining. At Tata Steel, we leverage our innovation capabilities, technology leadership with focus on safety and sustainability to create long-term value,” D B Sundara Raman, Vice President of raw materials at Tata Steel, told Business Standard.
He added that the beneficiation plant would facilitate coal production at a competitive price and attend to productivity, safety and environmental issues.
The plant also has a massive battery backup UPS that rolls out a seamless power supply to the 450 horsepower mine fan. It spontaneously shifts from DVC during a power failure. It keeps it operational for 40 minutes whilst simultaneously giving adequate time for power restoration and change-over to captive supply.
