Facebook and Instagram were affected by a major outage yesterday (13 March), with users across many countries being unable to use the two websites, reports Hindustan Today. Messenger was also not working for a number of users.
For some users, the major issue was not being able to log into their Facebook/Instagram accounts, while others were unable to update their News Feeds. WhatsApp also seems to have been partly affected, with some users not being able to access important features like voice notes.
Facebook on its part acknowledged the problem and stated that it was working to quickly resolve the situation.
“We’re focused on working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, but can confirm that the issue is not related to a DDoS attack,” the company’s statement said.
As per downdetector.com, Facebook stopped working properly at about 10pm IST, while the global outage began at around 9.38pm. The live map on the site showed the even users in India were affected.
Instagram also went down near the same time. This outage comes close on the heels of a similar issue which affected users of Google Maps and Drive services.
Overall, this outage, which went on for at least eight hours, is one of the most severe in Facebook’s history.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
