The US President-elect Donald Trump has named two top advisers to his administration, with the Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus as his new chief of staff and his campaign chief executive officer, Steve Bannon, as chief strategist and senior counsellor.

Trump said on Sunday (13 November),

Steve and Reince are highly qualified leaders who worked well together on our campaign and led us to a historic victory. Now I will have them both with me in the White House as we work to make America great again…Bannon and Priebus will continue the effective leadership team they formed during the campaign, working as equal partners to transform the federal government, making it much more efficient, effective and productive.

Priebus is among the longest-serving chairmen of the Republican Party, and is known to get along with different factions within the party. House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had urged Trump to pick Priebus, a source told CNN. Priebus first established himself in Wisconsin politics, where he worked as a legislative aide and, later, as a lawyer with a Milwaukee firm.

Bannon was executive director of Breitbart News, the conservative website that heralded the rise of alt-right ideologies this campaign cycle. He took a leave of absence in August to lead Trump’s campaign. Bannon has also produced several documentary films, served as a naval officer and was once an investment banker at Goldman Sachs.

Bannon expressed his gratitude to Trump in a statement for his role with the White House, commenting on his future relationship with Priebus as chief of staff.

We had a very successful partnership on the campaign, one that led to victory… We will have that same partnership in working to help President-elect Trump achieve his agenda.

Priebus also thanked the President-elect:

I am very grateful to the President-elect for this opportunity to serve him and this nation as we work to create an economy that works for everyone, secure our borders, repeal and replace Obamacare and destroy radical Islamic terrorism…He will be a great President for all Americans.
