In what marked an end of an era, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away on Thursday (16 August) following a prolonged illness.
This led to an outpouring of tribute to the three-time prime minister from countless of Indians as well as from various foreign leaders.
After initially being taken back to his home from AIIMS, his body was placed in the BJP Headquarters in New Delhi.
At about 2 PM on Friday (17 August), his final journey thus began from the headquarters to Smriti Sthal where his final rites would take place. In this roughly 4 km long trip he was accompanied by both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, both of whom opted to travel on foot.
Also in attendance were a sea of mourners to say their final goodbye to the charismatic leader. Here is a clip of his final journey:

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
