The Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday (11 October) said that 28 lakh earthen lamps will illuminate 56 ghats along the Saryu River for this year’s Deepotsav, setting a new world record, reported The Times Of India.
Earlier, the state government had set a target to lit 26 lakh diyas during the Deepotsav. The festival is scheduled for 19 October.
Last year, over 25 lakh diyas lit up the Saryu ghats.
A government spokesperson said preparations have been significantly scaled up for the 2025 celebration.
“For the first time, Laxman Kila Ghat will be included in the festivities, making the celebration even grander. More than a religious festival, this Deepotsav highlights India's timeless culture, spirituality, and global unity, while also reinforcing Ayodhya's status as a key hub for religious tourism. Laxman Kila Ghat will be illuminated with 1.25 lakh lamps,” an official was quoted as saying by ToI.
Additionally, 1.5 lakh lamps will light Ram Ki Paidi and Chaudhary Charan Singh Ghats, while Bhajan Sandhya Ghat will sparkle with 1.5 lakh lamps.
Ram Ki Paidi will serve as the core of the celebrations, dazzling with 15–16 lakh lamps.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will inaugurate the festival by lighting the lamps.
Sant Sharan Mishra, the nodal officer, said 30,000 volunteers will arrange 33 lakh diyas, requiring 75,000 litres of oil and 55 lakh cotton wicks.
Ram Manohar Lohia Awadh University, Faizabad has formed 22 committees to oversee every aspect, including coordination, security, lamp counting, traffic, cleanliness, media, first aid, decoration, rangoli, volunteer ID, and monitoring.
“Ayodhya Deepotsav is more than a religious festival. It celebrates the ideals of Ramrajya, symbolizes the unity of Indian culture, and serves as a platform to spread a message of peace globally,” he added.
