The accused in the abduction and rape of a three-year old girl in Luknow was killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday (6 June), NDTV reported.
The child, who went missing on the morning of 5 June from near Chandanagar Metro Station, was later found unconscious beneath a metro bridge in Alambagh.
Her parents took her to Lok Bandhu Hospital and lodged a complaint at Alambagh Police Station.
The accused was identified as Deepak Verma by the police after scanning CCTV footage that showed him with the child.
According to the police, Verma was a repeat offender with several criminal cases lodged against him.
Five police teams were deployed after the incident was reported. His vehicle registration was traced, and a Rs 1 lakh reward was declared for information leading to his arrest.
Verma was intercepted in the early hours of Friday near Devi Kheda in the Cantonment area.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashish Srivastava, Verma opened fire upon being confronted.
In retaliatory firing, he was critically injured and rushed to the hospital for treatment, but died due to injuries.
