Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has accused the Election Commission of "surrendering before the BJP," claiming that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar is seeking a post-retirement position.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, 3 February, Kejriwal asked Kumar to fulfil his duty and resist any political influence, as reported by ANI.
"...Our revolutionaries were hanged so that there would be democracy in the country, elections would be fair. But the way the Election Commission has surrendered before the BJP today, it seems as if the Election Commission does not exist... I request Rajiv Kumar Ji with folded hands. Do your duty, give up the desire for the post, give up the greed for the post. Now at the end of your career, do not destroy the country, the country's democracy," Kejriwal said.
His remarks come amid a heated political climate ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections on 5 February, with votes to be counted on 8 February.
Adding to the tensions, AAP on Sunday alleged that BJP workers attacked and vandalised its campaign van in the presence of Delhi Police. Party leaders Priyanka Kakkar and Jasmine Shah named Rohit Tyagi and Shanky as the alleged perpetrators and showed a video of the incident.
"BJP goons attacked and vandalised AAP's campaign van at New Delhi Assembly. The two BJP goons Rohit Tyagi and Shanky who are seen attacking in the video..." Shah claimed. Kakkar added, "On 18 January, BJP goons Rohit Tyagi and Shanky attacked Arvind Kejriwal with stones... The people of Delhi are watching everything and they will press the broom button with such force that Amit Shah will get a direct electric shock."
AAP also accused BJP candidate Parvesh Verma’s supporters of vandalising a campaign van at R K Ashram, while police allegedly remained passive.
With election day approaching, the political battle between AAP and BJP has intensified.
