Amid Outrage Over Kolkata Doctor Case, PM Modi Bats For Swift Justice In Crimes Against Women At Judicial Conference

Amid outrage over the rape and murder of a woman on-duty doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar hospital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (31 August) advocated for swift justice in cases related to crimes against women.

PM Modi added that the swift justice in such case will create a sense of security in the country's half population.

"Today, the atrocities against women and the safety of children are matters of grave concern. The country has enacted several stringent laws to ensure the safety of women. In 2019, the government initiated a plan to establish fast-track special courts, which include provisions for deposition centres for key witnesses," PM Modi said while addressing the National Conference of District Judiciary on Saturday.

"The role of District Monitoring Committees is vital in this regard. These committees include the district judge, DM (District Magistrate), and SP (Superintendent of Police). Their role is important in coordinating the various aspects of the criminal justice system. We need to make these committees more active," he said.

"The faster decisions are made in cases related to atrocities against women, the greater the sense of security will be for half of our population," he added.

During his address, PM Modi also highlighted the landmark legal reforms undertaken in recent years, including the introduction of the new criminal code laws, which, according to him, reflects the ethos of "Citizen First, Dignity First, and Justice First."
