In a significant twist to the alleged Rs 3,500 crore liquor scam in Andhra Pradesh, the state CID has reportedly found that YSRCP chief and former Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy was a beneficiary of the illicit funds, although he has not yet been named as an accused in the case.

According to an Indian Express report, the CID filed a chargesheet in a Vijayawada court on Saturday (19 July), which is pending cognisance.

IE stated in the report that monthly bribes to the tune of Rs 50–60 crore were generated between June 2019 and May 2024, facilitated by an excise policy allegedly skewed to benefit select liquor suppliers.

According to the CID, these funds were routed through a nexus of shell companies controlled by key accused Kesireddy Rajashekar Reddy—Jagan’s former IT advisor before reaching senior YSRCP leaders including P V Midhun Reddy and V Vijayasai Reddy.

The CID alleges that the duo played a central role in influencing the policy shift from an automated liquor distribution system to a manual one, enabling manipulation through favoured officials posted within the state’s beverages corporation.

YSRCP has condemned the chargesheet, calling it a politically motivated move.

“This is nothing but a political conspiracy designed to silence those who stand with the people,” Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy, party coordinator, was quoted as saying.

He further alleged that the entire case is based on “statements extracted under pressure, threats, third-degree torture, and also through bribes and inducements.”

Defending the former CM’s record, Ramakrishna Reddy said, “Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy took away liquor trade from private players and got it into the government fold to reduce and regulate liquor prices.”
