Apple’s India operations clocked a 60 per cent surge in iPhone production, reaching a turnover of nearly Rs 1.89 lakh crore in FY 2024–25, according to industry data, news agency IANS reported.

Of this total output, Apple exported Rs 1.5 lakh crore worth iPhones from India during 2024-25, Union Electronics and Information Technology Ministe Ashwini Vaishnaw has stated.

With the US-China tariff war escalating, Apple is likely to ramp up Indian production further as exports from China face fresh hurdles.

Lower US tariffs on Indian-made smartphones give Apple a strategic edge to scale up its manufacturing footprint in India.

Smartphone exports from India soared to Rs 1.75 lakh crore ($21 billion) in April–February 2024–25, marking a 54 per cent hike over the corresponding figure for the same period of 2023-24, according to the India Cellular and Electronics Association.

Apple’s supply chain made up 70 per cent of India’s smartphone exports, with Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu unit alone responsible for half the overseas shipments. The facility’s exports grew by over 40 per cent over the same period of the previous financial year.

Tata Electronics, which has acquired the Wistron smartphone manufacturing factory in Karnataka, contributed to 22 per cent of exports.

Another 12 per cent of the export consignments came from the Pegatron facility in Tamil Nadu, in which Tata Electronics acquired a 60 per cent stake earlier this year.

Samsung accounted for nearly 20 per cent of India’s total smartphone exports, placing it as the second-largest player after Apple.

Vaishnaw had earlier said that he expected smartphone exports to reach $20 billion (Rs 1.68 lakh crore) during 2024-25, but the estimate has already been exceeded in 11 months of the fiscal year.

Driven by the Centre’s PLI scheme, India’s electronics exports—led by smartphones—have gained major traction as global giants are shifting supply chains away from China.

The PLI scheme has not only boosted exports but also curbed imports, with local output now covering 99 per cent of India’s smartphone demand.
