Prime Minister Narendra Modi has granted the military 'complete freedom to decide on the mode, targets, and timing' of India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, NDTV reported citing sources.
The directive came during a high-level meeting between the Prime Minister, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, NSA Ajit Doval, CDS General Anil Chauhan, and the tri-services chiefs.
The Prime Minister reportedly 're-affirmed that it is our national resolve to deal a crushing blow to terrorism' and that he has 'complete faith and confidence' in the Indian military.
PM Modi reportedly said that the Armed Forces have complete operational freedom to decide on the mode, targets, and timing of our response.
The meeting came a day ahead of the PM-chaired Cabinet Committee on Security, the government's highest decision-making body on national security matters.
Defence Minister Ranath Singh, on Monday, briefed PM Modi on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir as top defence officials mulled options to punish those behind the 22 April attack.
Following the security meeting, Home Minister Amit Shah and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat arrived at the Prime Minister’s residence.
The green light from PM Modi reportedly paves the way for military action in response to the killing of 26 people, mostly civilians, in the worst such incident since the Pulwama terror attack in February 2019.
Back in 2019, India had launched precision air strikes on Jaish-e-Mohammed-run and Pakistani Army backed terror camps in Balakot, Pakistan.
Six years later, another Pakistan-based banned outfit—Lashkar-e-Taiba—has been linked to the Pahalgam terror attack case, with its proxy, The Resistance Front, claiming responsibility for the massacre.
