AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on Wednesday (14 May), just hours after a court granted him bail, the Hindustan Times reported.
Islam represents the Dhing constituency in Assam’s Nagaon district. He was initially arrested on 24 April, two days after the Pahalgam incident, for controversial comments made during a panchayat poll campaign rally.
“Islam was granted bail by the court on Wednesday, but he was detained under NSA as it was felt that going by his past records, his release could lead to security issues,” Nagaon Superintendent of Police, Swapnaneel Deka was quoted as saying by HT.
According to Deka, the detention was issued by Nagaon District Magistrate Narendra Kumar Shah, based on a police report stating that the legislator has been engaging in activities “prejudicial to public order and security of the state.”
Islam has been detained under Section 3(2) of the NSA.
“The MLA is at present lodged in Nagaon Central Jail. Under provisions of NSA, the detention is reviewed every three months, and he can be detained for a period of one year,” Deka added.
Islam was earlier arrested under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those related to endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of the country, promoting enmity between groups based on religion, race, or language, and for making statements intended to provoke public disorder.
