The Parliament on Wednesday (20 August) passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for IIM Guwahati to gain recognition as an institute of national importance, News On AIR reported.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan introduced the Bill, which seeks to bring IIM Guwahati under the ambit of the IIM Act, 2017.
The move follows the Memorandum of Settlement signed between the Centre, the Assam government, and the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), aimed at boosting development in the state.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The Assam Cabinet places on record its gratitude to Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and the Union Cabinet for approving an Indian Institute of Management in the State.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hailed the development, saying, “Congratulations to the people of Assam! The establishment of an IIM in the state will enhance education infrastructure and draw students as well as researchers from all over India.”
The Bill provides a funding corpus of Rs 555 crore over five years (2025-26 to 2029-30). After this period, the institute is expected to sustain itself financially through internal revenue generation.
With IIM Guwahati’s inclusion, the total number of IIMs recognised as institutes of national importance rises to 22.
The institute will function under the mentorship of IIM Ahmedabad, with academic sessions expected to begin this year from a temporary campus.
A permanent campus is planned at Palasbari in Assam’s Kamrup district.
