In a development that could strain India-Bangladesh relations, Dhaka has formally requested India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Touhid Hossain, Foreign Affairs Advisor in Bangladesh's interim government, confirmed the move, stating, “We have sent a note verbale (diplomatic message) to the Indian government saying that Bangladesh wants her back here for the judicial process.”

The Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants against Sheikh Hasina, along with several former Cabinet ministers, advisers, and officials, on charges of “crimes against humanity and genocide.”

Home Advisor Jahangir Alam further elaborated on the steps being taken, saying, “We have sent a letter to the foreign ministry regarding her extradition. The process is currently underway.” He also highlighted the existence of an extradition treaty between the two nations, which could serve as the legal framework for her return.

Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India since 5 August, when she fled Bangladesh amidst widespread protests involving students and the public.

While the Indian government has yet to issue an official response, the request poses a significant diplomatic challenge. Resolving the issue will require careful negotiations to prevent any adverse impact on the otherwise robust bilateral relationship between the two neighboring countries.
