Bengaluru Set For Enhanced Connectivity With Suburban And Circular Railway Projects

The Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP) and the City Circular Railway Project are poised to significantly improve connectivity between Bengaluru and its surrounding districts.

To integrate these systems, a feasibility study has been initiated, with the Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (K-RIDE) seeking approval from the South Western Railway to conduct the study.

“Once the feasibility study is completed, K-RIDE will prepare a detailed project report, after which work will begin, subject to approval from both the state and central governments,” an official stated.

The Circular Railway, designed to span 287 kilometres around Bengaluru’s outskirts, will connect key regions such as Devanahalli and Doddaballapur.

Rs 7.2 crore has already been allocated for developments in areas including Malur, Heelelige, and Nidavanda.

The ongoing suburban railway project, covering 148 kilometres across four corridors, includes:

• A 41.4 km route linking Bengaluru City (KSRTC), the airport, and Devanahalli.

• A 25 km stretch connecting Bannikahalli and Chikkabanavara.

• A 35.5 km corridor between Kengeri and Whitefield.

• A 46.25 km route from Heelalige to Rajanukunte.

The Circular Railway will feature several vital stretches, including:

• A 40.9 km route from Nidavanda to Doddaballapur.

• A 28.5 km stretch from Doddaballapur to Devanahalli.

• A 46.5 km corridor from Devanahalli to Malur.

• A 52 km stretch from Malur to Heelelige.

• A 42 km route from Heelelige to Hejjala.

• A 43.5 km section from Hejjala to Solur.

Additionally, the railway network will link key stations, with a critical connection between Nidavanda and Chikkabanavara integrated into the city via Bangalore Cantonment station.

The Railway Department has reportedly requested approval for Phase 2 of the suburban railway project, which aims to extend the network by 146 kilometres.

Proposed extensions include routes from Chikkaballapur to Kunigal, Chikkabanavara to Dabbaspet, Kengeri to Hejjala, and Heelalige to Anekal Road.

The Railway Department is awaiting approval for this proposed expansion, which will further integrate the suburban and circular railway networks, enhancing Bengaluru’s transport infrastructure.
