The CBI arrested Ropar Range DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar at his Mohali office on Thursday (16 October) for allegedly demanding Rs 8 lakh bribe, reported The Times Of India.
An iron merchant from Fatehgarh Sahib district had approached authorities, claiming Bhullar sought the amount to “settle” a case against him.
During searches of Bhullar-linked properties, CBI officers allegedly seized around Rs 5 crore in cash, 1.5 kg of jewellery, 22 luxury watches, keys to an Audi and a Mercedes, locker keys, 40 litres of imported liquor, a pistol, a revolver, and a double-barrelled gun, the agency said.
They also recovered Rs 21 lakh from the middleman involved.
The agency said, “CBI laid a trap and caught the private individual red-handed while demanding and accepting Rs 8 lakh from the complainant on behalf of the DIG at Sector 21, Chandigarh.”
In a “controlled call” to Bhullar, he “acknowledged the payment” and instructed the middleman and complainant to meet him at his office, the statement added.
Both accused will be produced in court, and investigations are ongoing.
Bhullar, a 2009-batch IPS officer, previously served as SP Mohali and DIG Patiala Range before joining Ropar Range on 27 November 2024.
He also headed the SIT that questioned senior Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a drug smuggling case.
The complainant, a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh, was facing a case of theft of iron and steel products.
