Chennai Metro Achieves Major Engineering Feat With Vadapalani Viaduct Construction On Corridor 4

Chennai Metro Rail Limited has accomplished a major engineering feat by successfully installing U-shaped concrete beams for the Corridor 4 viaduct that crosses over Jawaharlal Nehru Salai in Vadapalani, directly above the operational Phase 1 metro line.

The project presented unique challenges that required innovative solutions.

Traditional crane installation methods proved impractical due to the bustling traffic on the 100 foot thoroughfare and the functioning metro corridor beneath.

CMRL engineers responded by implementing a sophisticated launching girder technique to carefully position the U-girders across the 45 metre span.

The engineering complexity extended to the supporting infrastructure, where specialists designed a pier cap measuring 23 metres in height, 10.46 metres in width, and 3.5 metres in depth.

This massive structure required 470 cubic metres of concrete and weighs approximately 1,200 tonnes, positioned strategically on Arcot Road.

Despite the spatial and utility constraints, this massive pier cap was completed in a record time of just 2 months following the utility shifting.

Vadapalani station represents a architectural triumph with its innovative three-tier design incorporating commercial facilities, concourse areas, and platform levels, maximising functionality within spatial limitations.

The ambitious 26.1 km Corridor 4 project will eventually link Marina lighthouse with Poonamallee bypass.

Whilst trial operations have commenced between Poonamallee and Porur sections, CMRL is aiming to expedite completion of the Vadapalani segment.
