Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on Monday (28 April) began trial runs on a 10 km stretch of Corridor 4 between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction, marking a pivotal milestone in the Phase-2 expansion of the Chennai Metro project.
The testing, which involved a driverless train set, was conducted with drivers onboard for safety purposes, according to official sources, reported The Hindu.
This corridor, forming part of the 26.1 km stretch from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass, is one of the most anticipated segments under construction.
This section is about 10 km starting from Poonamallee Bypass Metro Station to Porur Junction Metro Station, interconnected with Poonamallee Metro Depot, stated a release from CMRL.
The Poonamallee Metro Depot will serve as the central hub for coordinating all testing and commissioning activities in this segment.
The stretch also includes the Mullai Thottam Metro Station and is being prepared for progressive testing phases that are critical to ensure safety, performance, and passenger comfort. This meticulous testing is aimed at validating all technical systems before public operations commence.
MA Siddique, Managing Director of CMRL, highlighted the significance of this phase, saying, the extension of testing and trials today marks a significant milestone in the progress of the Phase-2 Project of CMRL.
He added that these trials along the viaduct section of Corridor 4 (26.1 km from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass) demonstrated commitment to achieving key project targets in the shortest possible time period.
