The Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA) is planning to renovate three railway stations in Chennai.
The Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M. G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station, Tambaram, and Avadi railway stations, which are all managed by the Chennai railway division, are among them.
RLDA is a statutory authority, under the Ministry of Railways, for the development of vacant railway land for commercial use for the purpose of generating revenue by non-tariff measures.
A detailed project report (DPR) is being created and the initial study is being conducted by experts for the renovation of Chennai Central Railway Station.
This initiative comes after the Southern Railway successfully started the preparatory work to rebuild the Egmore railway station as part of the Gati Shakti Project.
The Southern Railway granted a contract worth Rs 734.91 crore to Hyderabad-based M/s DEC Infrastructure & Projects India Private Limited on EPC (engineering procurement contract) basis for Egmore railway station redevelopment.
The feasibility study and detailed project report by the RLDA, initiated at a cost of 1.07 crore, are at various stages of completion, according to B Guganesan, Chief Public Relations Officer of Southern Railway, reports The Hindu.
The consultant's survey work was over, he added and the RLDA and Southern Railway are working to complete the Tambaram railway station's master design.
The survey work has started the basic work with a view to providing more amenities to handle the growing passenger traffic at the Avadi railway station.
It started in the final week of December by Kitco, Kochi, the agency selected for the job.
The nine stations that are being redeveloped by Southern Railway include five in Tamil Nadu (Madurai, Katpadi, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari), three in Kerala and one in Puducherry.
