The Chhattisgarh government has launched the construction of nearly 3,000 houses under a special Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme for families hit by Naxal violence, including surrendered extremists who normally do not meet eligibility rules, an officer supervising the project said, reported Hindustan Times.

State officials have identified 5,000 beneficiaries, of which 3,000 have already been approved for housing.

Authorities released the first instalment to 2,111 families, while 128 have received their second instalment.

Sukma accounts for the highest number of sanctioned houses—984—followed by Bijapur with 761 and Narayanpur with 376, among other districts.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said, “This is not just about building houses, it's about restoring faith and stability.”

He described the initiative as part of a broader push for “trust, development and rehabilitation” in conflict-hit regions.

Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma called the move a “historic step towards justice and dignity” for communities long affected by violence.

He added that success stories show “development can reach even the most remote corners” when driven by empathy and effective administration.

Officials emphasised that the project also includes beneficiaries who once took part in extremist activities but chose to surrender, reflecting the government’s approach to reconciliation and stability.
