A massive cloudburst struck the outskirts of Dehradun on Tuesday (16 Tuesday), unleashing heavy rainfall, landslides and flash floods across Uttarakhand’s capital.

The Sahastradhara area bore the brunt of the deluge, with homes, shops, roads and hotels swept away, while cars were left mangled in floodwaters, according to one News 18 report.

Officials confirmed that at least two people remain missing, prompting large-scale rescue operations by SDRF and NDRF teams.

The downpour that began late on Monday night caused the Tamsa River to overflow, inundating the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, one of Dehradun’s most revered shrines.

Water entered the temple courtyard and rose to the feet of the Hanuman idol, though the sanctum sanctorum was spared.

In addition, a bridge near Fun Valley and Uttarakhand Dental College on the Dehradun–Haridwar National Highway sustained major damage, disrupting connectivity.

Elsewhere, the Chandrabhaga river in Rishikesh has been in spate since morning, pushing water levels onto the highway.

SDRF teams rescued three people stranded in the river, though several vehicles remain trapped in the floodwaters. Authorities remain on high alert as more rain has been forecast.

This latest disaster comes just weeks after a cloudburst in Uttarkashi’s Dharali area on 5 August triggered devastating flash floods that wiped out homes, hotels and homestays, leaving multiple people dead and missing.

Rescue teams continue to search for those missing in Dehradun, as officials assess the scale of damage to roads, bridges and property across the flood-hit region.
