Bihar’s capital officially became the 24th city in India to have a metro on Monday (6 October) as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the first phase of the Patna Metro, India Today reported.

The Blue Line now runs from the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) to Bhoothnath, connecting three key stations: Patliputra ISBT, Zero Mile, and Bhoothnath.

“This is an important step by the state government toward developing a modern, eco-friendly, and efficient transport system. It will boost employment and trade, and through the metro project, Patna residents will have a new, safe, and faster travel option, making commuting more convenient,” Nitish Kumar said in a X post.

The inaugural run started from the Patliputra Bus Depot, with Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha present.

Metro services for passengers will begin from Tuesday (7 October), operating daily from 8 am to 10 pm with 40-42 trips along the 4.3-km stretch.

Fares start at Rs 15 for a single station ride, while a full trip from ISBT to Bhoothnath costs Rs 30.

Designed with motifs inspired by Bihar’s Madhubani art, each train can carry up to 900 passengers, with each coach accommodating 300, ensuring smoother travel even during peak hours.

Trains will run at 20-minute intervals on this initial stretch.

The Patna Metro, a long-cherished vision of Nitish Kumar, was first approved by the state cabinet in June 2013.

The Union government approved the project in June 2014, followed by the foundation stone laying by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 17 February 2019.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation serves as project consultant, while L&T handles the design and construction of Phase 1, Corridor 2.

The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 13,925.5 crore, funded jointly by the Bihar government, central government, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The launch of the metro marks a major step toward modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly urban transport in Patna, promising faster, safer, and more convenient commuting for the city’s residents.
