As the Assembly elections approach, leaders from the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have intensified their slum outreach campaign that was initiated five months ago.
As part of the initiative, high-ranking BJP leaders, including its seven Delhi MPs, along with party workers, spend nights in various slums and jhuggi-jhopdi clusters, engaging with the inhabitants.
To date, the party's leaders have carried out such initiatives in 1,194 slum clusters throughout the city with the aim of reinforcing the party's support among the lower middle class.
"The main aim behind this campaign is to interact with the slum-dwellers and understand possible solutions (to their issues) directly from them," Vishnu Mittal, the state general secretary and coordinator of the campaigns, was quoted as saying.
As part of the Slum Expansion Initiative, the party has designated individuals to serve as slum expanders and slum caretakers, tasked with overseeing the program throughout the city.
Virendra Sachdeva, the president of the BJP in Delhi, who has spent numerous nights in various jhuggi clusters claimed that the BJP is the pioneer political party in interacting with the younger generation, in all the jhuggi clusters in Delhi.
He added that the interaction over the past five months gave them insights into their issues and potential solutions. "Through our party workers, we've gained a deep understanding of the lifestyle and challenges faced by the inhabitants of these jhuggi clusters," he said.
Sachdeva promised that if the BJP secures a victory in Delhi, they will improve the quality of life for residents by offering amenities such as timely access to water, electricity, and food through the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB).
South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, in his statement, expressed that the BJP is committed to enhancing the jhuggi clusters rather than tearing them down. He further mentioned that their forthcoming government plans to establish a distinct department dedicated to maintaining hygiene in these jhuggi settlements.
Dushyant Gautam, the national general secretary of BJP, voiced his assurance that the BJP is poised to establish the forthcoming government in Delhi.
