In a big setback for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Arvind Kejriwal has lost in his re-election bid from the New Delhi constituency against BJP's Parvesh Verma.
Kejriwal was defeated by Parvesh Verma by a margin of over 4,000 votes, according to the EC data. Congress' Sandeep Dikshit finished at third position by securing over 4,500 votes.
These results are likely to fuel further discussions about the discord between AAP and Congress, two INDI Alliance partners on national level, and whether an alliance could have helped Kejriwal keep his seat, if not his government.
Arvind Kejriwal has held the New Delhi seat since 2013, when he beat Congress stalwart and then Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, marking the beginning of AAP's ten-year governance of Delhi.
Besides Kejriwal, his former deputy Manish Sisodia was also defeated in Janpgura, highlighting the extent of the party's defeat in this election.
Aspiring for a third successive term, Kejriwal and the AAP faced a significant setback as at around 1.45 pm, the BJP had taken the lead in 48 of the 70 Delhi Assembly seats, with the AAP leading in only 22.
However, there was a silver lining as Chief Minister Atishi secured a victory over the BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri by a margin of 3,500 votes.
