In a significant move towards cleaning the Yamuna, the Delhi government will set up 32 real-time water quality monitoring stations throughout the river and its major draining tributaries.

As per a senior official, 10 of the stations will be placed directly on the Yamuna River while the other 22 will be situated on important drains emptying into the river, reported ANI.

Major locations on the Yamuna for setting up the stations include Palla, ISBT Bridge, ITO Bridge, Nizamuddin Bridge, and Okhla Barrage.

Some of the significant drains that will be monitored include Najafgarh, Metcalfe House, Khyber Pass, Sweeper Colony, and also border drains situated at Singhu Border (DD6, Sonepat), Bahadurgarh, Shahdara, Sahibabad, and Banthia.

These monitoring stations will oversee the river and all of its drains, recording the date of the cleanout. They are expected to be functional by the end of this year and currently the tendering phase has already started.

The real-time stations will measure vital indicators of water quality like BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), TSS (Total Suspended Solids), and nitrogen, phosphorus, and ammonia concentrations. The data is to be sent directly to the server of Delhi Pollution Control Committee(DPCC)

The ongoing Yamuna river cleaning project is being monitored by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and their Minister Parvesh Verma. The three of them have regularly monitored the large drains providing inflow to the river.

In the 2025–26 Delhi Budget, Chief Minister Gupta earmarked Rs 500 crore exclusively for the purpose of cleaning Yamuna. The amount will be used for the construction of 40 decentralized sewage treatment plants (STPs) to treat water before it flows into the river.

Moreover, an additional Rs 1,500 crore has been allocated for the purpose of rejuvenating the Yamuna and also for upgrading sewage infrastructure.
