By the end of June, commuters will be able to travel from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut in just 45 minutes, as India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor nears full completion, officials from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) confirmed on Tuesday (20 May).

The 82 km long high-speed corridor, also known as the Namo Bharat Corridor, is being developed by NCRTC to boost regional connectivity.

Of the total length, a 55 km stretch with 11 stations is already operational, while work on the remaining 27 km portion is progressing rapidly, an NCRTC official said.

A two km extension from Sarai Kale Khan to Jangpura remains under construction, PTI reported.

Trial runs are already underway on the two remaining stretches — a 4.5 km elevated segment between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar, and a 23 km section from Meerut South to Modipuram.

The corridor’s Sarai Kale Khan station is nearly ready, equipped with 12 escalators, four lifts, platform screen doors and five entry-exit points.

The final leg of the corridor in Meerut features three stations — Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram.

Begumpul, located in the heart of the market area, is an underground station serving both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro services, the official said. Modipuram station will include a foot overbridge for pedestrian access.

Namo Bharat trains have already catered to over one crore passengers since the launch of its 17 km priority section in October 2023. The Delhi segment up to New Ashok Nagar began operations in January 2024.

Standard fare from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South is Rs 150 and Rs 180 for premium class.

Additionally, NCRTC is trialling the 23 km Meerut Metro, which shares infrastructure with Namo Bharat. The metro will include 13 stations, three of which are underground.
