The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed tunnelling work between Maa Anandmayee Marg and Tughlakabad Railway Colony on the Golden Line, a key segment of Phase-IV’s Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor.

On Saturday (7 June), a 96 metre long Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) successfully broke through at the Tughlakabad Railway Colony station, marking the completion of a 792 metre underground stretch.

“Breakthrough of TBM at Tughlakabad Railway colony station site took place in presence of Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Transport, Information Technology, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, Dr Vikas Kumar, Managing Director/DMRC & senior officials,” DMRC said in a post on X.

The tunnel, built at an average depth of 18 metres, comprises 566 circular rings and has an inner diameter of 5.8 metres.

It was constructed using the Earth Pressure Balancing Method and lined with precast concrete rings cast at a fully mechanised yard in Mundka. These rings were cured using steam to ensure early strength development.

The parallel tunnel for down movement is expected to achieve breakthrough by July 2025.

As per current approvals under Phase-IV, Delhi Metro is constructing 40.109 kilometres of underground network, of which 19.343 kilometres fall under the Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor.

Emphasising safety, DMRC noted, “All necessary safety precautions were taken during the construction of the tunnel below the existing built-up structures,” with ground movement closely monitored using high-precision instruments.

TBMs have long been instrumental to DMRC’s expansion, allowing seamless tunnelling under dense urban areas.

Having deployed around 30 TBMs during Phase-III, the corporation continues to push engineering boundaries as it expands the city’s transit backbone.
